Afghan Militants Strike US Consulate in Herat

Insurgents in the western Afghan town of Herat launched an attack on the U.S. consulate Friday morning.
State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said unidentified forces drove a truck to the front gate where they attacked security forces with assault rifles and possibly rocket propelled grenades. The truck exploded shortly after the attack, causing extensive damage to the front gate.

Harf said U.S. security forces restrained any attackers who were able to enter the American compound. She said several of the militants were wearing suicide vests.

There were no American casualties.

Earlier reports said at least one person was killed in the attack and several others were wounded.

The Associated Press reports the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Militant attacks have escalated in recent weeks, a surge that comes as U.S.-led foreign troops reduce their presence in Afghanistan ahead of a full withdrawal by the end of next year.
